Your move to a better life in a new country could start at a job expo.
Job expos are the ideal place to meet top employers and recruitment consultants who want to recruit skilled people. Going to a job expo also gives you the opportunity to speak to a range of companies who can help you make your move a stress-free one.
Tips for finding a job at an expo
- Do some research before you go on where you’d like to live in your new country – it will make your expo experience more worthwhile.
- Start the visa application process – work out which visa you’re eligible for and get the ball rolling.
- Maximise your time at the expo – some times of the day (and days of the week) are quieter than others – ideal if you want to avoid the queues.
- Get your paperwork sorted – have hard copies of your CV on hand to pass out to prospective employers (and make sure your CV is well written and well presented), and consider attaching a photo of yourself to jog their memories later on.
- Brush up your interview skills. Some employers interview at the expos so make sure your first impression is a good one by dressing appropriately – and remember that a smile and a firm handshake go a long way.
So what are you waiting for? If you’re ready for a change of lifestyle, then going to a job expo could be your chance to make your dream of moving countries a reality. Visit www.canada.com now for more information on upcoming Opportunities Canada Expos.

Another reason why Canada’s such a great destination for skilled migrants: according to a recent survey Canada tops the list of expat-friendly countries.
The HSBC Bank International’s Expat Explorer Survey interviewed 2,155 expats in 48 countries and concluded that Canada was the most welcoming country to expats. Ninety-five percent of the expats surveyed said that they’d struck up friendships with locals, compared to 92% in Germany, which came in at second on the list.
The survey considered four main categories: how easy it was to meet and befriend locals, the number that joined a community group, the percentage who bought property, and the number that learned the local language. Read more here.
It’s no surprise that Canada rates so highly as an expat destination: it has a diverse culture, accessible language, and a thriving expat community. It even offers free language training and host programmes designed to help new migrants to Canada navigate through daily life.

Manitoba is the most generous province in Canada according to the latest generosity index published by Fraser Institute.
The Generosity Index report uses data from personal income tax returns to evaluate monetary generosity across Canada and the United States.
According to the report, 28% of people living in Manitoba had donated to registered charities, and the overall amount donated was 1.14% of total income. Second and third on the list of Canadian provinces are Ontario and Saskatchewan.
Manitoba, with its population of just under 1.2 million people, is a great place to live. It offers a rich culture with annual food, film, music and art festivals; a lush landscape where you can enjoy Canada’s great outdoors; plus you’ll get to experience both beautiful snowy winters and mild sun-drenched summers.

Canadian citizenship has been granted to a child born during an international flight over Canada.
Baby Sasha, whose Ugandan mother was 8 1/2 months pregnant at the time, was born on New Years Eve at 30,000 feet during an eight hour Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Boston.

Weighing in at six pounds, Sasha was delivered without complications as the plane crossed through Canadan airspace.
Initially Canadian officials were uncertain whether the baby would be eligible for Canadian citizenship as there was no known precedent. After federal immigration lawyers reviewed the case, it was decided that she was eligible for Canadian citizenship due to Canadian territory extending to Canadian airspace.

A report entitled “Powering Up the Future”, undertaken by Canada’s Electricity Sector Council (ESC), has revealed that Canada’s electricity is at risk from the lack of skilled staff available to fill vacancies. The report states that there is an immediate shortfall of 1300 skilled employees and that there will be 25,000 positions needing filling within the next 6 years, if Canada’s energy demands are going to be met.
Catherine Cottingham, Executive Director and CEO, Electricity Sector Council explained, “At a minimum, our jobs require a high school diploma or completion of a four-year apprenticeship, and the vast majority of the electricity industry’s positions need post-secondary education. This means that if the industry is to address these shortages in time through Canada’s learning institutions and immigration channels, we must act now.”

Alongside the Federal Government’s development of 320 Foreign Credential Referral Offices across the country, Provincial Governments have also been working to ease labour shortages by streamlining skilled migrants passage into the workforce.
This month, Alberta released A Foreign Qualifications Recognition Plan for Alberta. The plan was developed through consultation with stakeholders and various government departments.
The key features of the plan are:
- “To create a $1-million Innovation Fund to encourage the development of innovative and flexible approaches to foreign qualifications assessment;
- To improve access to information and resources for employers, immigrants and potential newcomers;
- To develop International Education Guides which will include comprehensive information on educational systems and credentials in other countries, along with comparisons to Alberta standards; and
- To develop occupational profiles detailing the certification, licensing, or assessment process.”
“Streamlining foreign qualification recognition is a ‘win-win’ scenario for newcomers to our province and for Alberta,” stated Doug Horner, Alberta Minister of Advanced Education and Technology. “This plan will help expand our labour market, strengthen our economy and provide opportunities for immigrants to make the most of the skills they’ve brought to out province.”
